Bring Your Own Vinyl Night 31st January 2014

After the success of our first Bring Your Own Vinyl Night last Month I have decided to do it all again on 31st January 2014 at the Queens Head Pub Mold, 8pm till late.
The idea is that people can bring their own vinyl along on the night and then have a 15 minute session on the decks playing whatever they choose from any genre or era.
This is a great way to socialise with other individuals passionate about music and to discover new artists you didn't know existed. I will be on hand to help individuals who have not used a DJ set up before.

Hope to see you all there!

Press Release from The Sound of Salvation Records

Klaus Johann Grobe's twice sold out mini album is being released digitally and has already been played on Radio One by Temples as their show and tell track (Koordinaten).

"Swiss duo, Klaus Johann Grobe, play a kind of danceable Krautrock informed by early '80's New York punk funk pioneers such as ESG......" Shindig.

Driven by an organic yet metronomic beat aligned with synth, chant-like vocals and a monstrous funky bass, this is seriously bum-waggling electro-freak goodness. The music does seem to aim towards a certain kind of hypnosis, particulary as the sleeping pill echo-heavy vocals cycle over the locked grooves the pair throw down.

This band are certainly aiming towards the more dance-orientated arena of Kraut music, aligning the metro pulse of Klaus Dinger and Kraftwerk's calculators to more biological factors - kind of like moss growing on the mainframe.

The duo played selected UK dates in early 2013 in support of their vinyl album release which gained a great Shindig review, Louder than War "Artist of the Day" and Norman Records Single of the Week. After selling out twice (once as a private pressing by the band and also as the UK release by The Sound of Salvation) the album has now been released digitally with worldwide distribution.

Klaus Johann Grobe will return to the UK in September 2013 with a single release to coincide with their UK tour and appearance at the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia.

Tour Dates

25th September: Central Station, Wrexham, with Psychic Ill's
26th September: The Underground, Stoke
27th September: The Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia
28th September: The Labour Club, Northampton
30th September: The Washington, Sheffield with The Holydrug Couple
2nd October: Oporto, Leeds
3rd October: Mondo Fuzz @ Global Cafe, Reading
4th October: Klub Motorik @ The windmill, London

Reggae in the park a boombastic success

Reggae in the park a boombastic success

Helped by the crowds that flocked to Oswestry’s food festival, ‘Reggae in the Park’ which took place recently (July 14) was a resounding success, say the organisers.

“The music was a real draw and the park was the busiest it has been for ages, all helped by the great weather, of course,” said Neil Phillips of the organiser, Eclectic.

“It worked really well with the food festival, with lots of people taking advantage of the excellent street food and drink available close by,” he added.

Record enthusiasts from the Peoples’ Vinyl Collective (PVC) and other guest DJs took to the turntables for a non-stop afternoon of reggae old and new. Jilly Hartshorn (aka D-Jilly) and Ben Williams of PVC and The Vinylistas played out a blend of retro dancehall, dub and classic reggae cuts,  while James Shuttleworth (aka Pixel) treated the crowd to some contemporary drum and bass.

Neil Phillips, Adam Beckett and Saffron Rainey also shared in the DJing, playing some punjabi reggae, ska and rocksteady. Plus there were plenty of tracks from artists on Jamaica’s famous Studio One label including Bob Marley and the Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, Dennis Brown, Ken Boothe, and the Heptones.

Park-goers were full of praise for the event on the day and via social media.

“Great reggae vibes in the park today. It was like a little slice of Notting Hill Carnival in Oswestry,” said Terry Cripps.

“Awesome tunes in the park on Sunday. It made for a very chilled out afternoon. Please bring more of that to the town,” said Julie Richards.

Amanda McGregor said: “It was great to have something different and the atmosphere was really lovely. I can't remember the last time that I had such a relaxing, stress-free day”. She added: “It was also nice to see that people had tidied up after themselves.”

Visitors in town for the food festival also wandered over to check out the music, including Carl Hopley from Birmingham. “It was a fab ending to a great weekend. Such a fantastic, chilled out atmosphere,” he commented. “I sat in the shade of a tree, intoxicated by the beautiful weather and chilled atmosphere of the sounds. Loved it!”

Joanna Dalietos said: “Perfect weather and great tunes. I hope it’s going to be a more regular thing.”

Neil Phillips said: “The response has been overwhelming and we’re delighted to announce that, with the kind permission of the town council, reggae will be returning to the park for the August Bank Holiday weekend.”

‘Reggae in the Park 2’ will take place Sunday 25 August from midday, concluding Oswestry Town Council’s widely praised summertime programme of bandstand music in Cae Glas Park.

Other remaining bandstand dates include Ifton Brass (July 28), Oswestry Street Band (August 4), and Telford Brass (August 18).

PVC Celebrates it's 3rd Birthday

PVC is 3!

The People’s Vinyl Collective (PVC), Oswestry’s community of record enthusiasts that meets weekly at the Ironworks, celebrates its third birthday this month (July).

To mark the occasion, PVC DJs and supporters past, present and new are invited to a birthday bash at the Ironworks on July 17 from 8pm.

Since its debut in July 2010, PVC has become a popular Wednesday evening fixture at the Ironworks. In this time, over 200 different DJs have taken to the turntables spinning in excess of 9,000 tunes.

Founded by Neil Phillips of Eclectic and Tom Perry, PVC allows vinyl enthusiasts of all ages to share their music in an informal and friendly atmosphere. The format is simple: take in four favourite tracks on record and give them a spin.

“Anything goes, as long as it’s on vinyl,” said Neil. “The range of music played from week to week is amazing. On any one night, you can be listening to the latest vinyl release from The National, The Arctic Monkeys or Major Lazer, then a world music gem by Khaled, followed by a long-forgotten or obscure track by someone like Billie Holiday, Lew Stone or Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci.”

He added: “The sleeve artwork and limited edition formats such as coloured or shaped vinyl are as much a talking point as the music. People turn up with some real collectors’ items.”

PVC Wednesdays are broadcast online at PVC Radio (http://radio.peoplesvinylcollective.org/), with Twitter feeds listing DJs and their sets as they are played.

Success

PVC’s success undoubtedly reflects the current resurgence of interest in both second hand and new vinyl. Record sections in Oswestry’s retro outlets and charity shops are visibly expanding, and after a gap of 20 years, Oswestry’s high street has a record shop again. Outwhere Records in Beatrice Street, which specialises in new and used vinyl, was opened in May by PVC member, Gordon Mills.

Neil said: “Thanks must go to Ironworks’ owners, Steve and Ros Gore, for supporting alternative music and niche events like PVC. The town is lucky to have such an inspiring and beautiful venue which nurtures local culture and music as well as attracting big name artists.”

Ahead of the 3rd birthday party, PVC DJs will be taking part in Reggae in the Park on July 14. One of Oswestry Town Council’s bandstand events in Cae Glas Park over the summer, it promises four hours of uplifting reggae and hopefully some sunny weather from midday to 4pm.  Park-goers will be encouraged to visit the Oswestry Food and Drink Festival nearby for snacks and drinks.

More info on the PVC party can be found on the website (http://radio.peoplesvinylcollective.org) or on Facebook-https://www.facebook.com/events/416848575096706/

Dark Patrick return to Oswestry

Ukrainian duo back in Oswestry by popular demand

Ukrainian music duo, Dark Patrick, make a welcome return to Oswestry’s Ironworks on July 18 following their appearance earlier this year to rave reviews.

Captivated by the Ironworks venue when they performed back in March, band members Eva and Paul were keen to make a second visit for what will be the final date of their UK 2013 summer tour. The six-week tour includes appearances at the Hidden Hill Festival in Lincs Wold, Camden Rock in London and the Llanfyllin Workhouse Festival.

Combining bandura, hurdy-gurdy, uilleann pipes, vocals, whistles, harmonicas and synthesized sounds, Dark Patrick produce an eclectic mix of styles that is as varied as the list of instruments that they play.

Facebook comments after Dark Patrick’s March gig included: “These two are extraordinary, making sounds I've never heard before. If you missed this gig, catch the very next one you can.”
Another said: “Very enjoyable, ethnic, ethereal, haunting, unlike any other music.”

Oswestry’s Neil Phillips and world music/folk trio, Les Glaneurs, will be in support.

Dark Patrick have had extensive airplay on BBC Radio 6, Radio 3 and Radio Shropshire, and were recently featured as a fresh fave in BBC DJ Tom Robinson’s music blog.

Tickets are available from Outwhere Records (Beatrice Street, Oswestry) and the Ironworks (Church Street). Entry on the door is £7. More information at www.the-ironworks.co.uk and www.darkpatrick.com
